A Farmer's Trust

A Farmer's Trust
Music: Pat Metheny
Lyrics: Randy Phillips

Twilight arrives with a sliver of moonlight
Golden sun rests low on the fields
And the wind through the grain
Slowly ripples like water and falls
As quiet as we both feel
We’ve trusted our life
And we’ve trusted this land,
The family we’ve made

I surrender the days as I sit by my window
How I’d run the soil through my hands
Now the children are grown
And our bones have grown older
And we’ve become a part of this land
The wheat and these fields have a voice of their own
They call, they call us home.

Now the twilight’s arrived and my body’s grown weary
Golden sun rests low on the fields
This flesh I’ve been given
Has nourished my spirit
As time releases us from the wheel
The earth will receive what we give when we trust
I give a farmers trust.

A Change Of Heart

Thunderheads are gathering
Pale in the darkening light
Wild geese in a distant sky
Call out their long northern flight

Looking up from fields of grass
Chilled by the breath of the wind
Thinking nothing seems to last
Just as the sun slips out of sight

As if erased in the grace of forgiveness
Part of the heart dissolving in the falling mist
Gone into the blue
All that passes through
Rising moon will shed her shadow
Soon to show her face among the stars

So it is with us
Till we return to dust
Listen to the quiet hush
In drops of rain
Inside a change of heart

Questions

Who held the clay and then breathed us into being?
What is the pearl that has been hidden in the heart?
When did the world fall and fill us up with longing?
Where we are when it all has come apart.

How is it true when you’re searching for the answers
That when you look there is nothing there to see?
Lean close and listen, there’s nothing there to hear
But wind in the seagrass and whispers in the trees.

I woke up from this dreaming
Still I found no one to answer
When I asked

What has made us as radiant as stardust?
Where can we go as we’re orbiting the sun?
When can it be that we’ll all be free from sorrow?
How to return to where nothing’s left undone?

For You

It’s For You

If you ask the sun
In it’s best dressed rays
Wrapped in sky
Why it shines right through

If the nightfall ties
Ribbons round the moon
It’s from me, my true love
For you

A sweet sprig of green grass to chew
I’ll grant you the wishes of
Freshly fallen stars
I’d walk until I’ve worn out my shoes
For you

Jasmine scented air
It’s for you
Starlight for your hair
Wild wood wings in flight
It’s for you
Gifts of golden light
Moon tide’s silver shine
It’s for you
Every touch of time

Better Days

Music: Pat Metheny
Lyrics: Randy Phillips

I didn’t sleep ‘till the morning
should’ve taken that sign as a warning
Last night my well thought out plans
Took it on the chin, came caving in again

Looking forward to the time
When things go well
Looking forward to the time
The roof isn’t wrecked and the rain
Doesn’t drip on my face in bed

Better days ahead
If my eyes weren’t so blurred I’d be
Seeing straight ahead

Stock market fell to the bottom
Talk about your bills, boy, have I got ‘em
Last night deflated desire
Broke my stride, my flow
Screwed up my throw again

Looking forward to my change in attitude
Looking forward to my change in mood,
Turning black and then blue
‘cause my bankroll is in the red
Better days ahead
If you can’t change the story
Change the point of view, instead
